
The IMPACT the RACE Speaker- Dr. Timothy D. Wilson: Educational Research Workshop and Seminar

Dr. Timothy D. Wilson PhD, Associate Professor, Departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology and Dentistry, Director of Corps for Research of Instructional and Perceptual Technologies, University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry had two days visit with the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education (DABE) and IMPACT the RACE faculty and staff, School of Medicine, University of Mississippi Medical Center on Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6, 2025. His visit was supported by the IMPACT the RACE Speaker Funding at the School of Medicine, the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Wilson served as the Associate Editor for the Journey of Anatomical Science Education (ASE) from 2017 to 2022. Currently, he is a member of the editorial board for ASE. In the field of anatomy, the ASE is considered one of the most prestigious journals worldwide. He teaches anatomy and is the director of Dental Anatomy, as well as the director of the 4th year Undergraduate Head and Thorax Anatomy class, using both online classes and face-to-face laboratories. He has recently received a National Teaching Award for dentistry education in Canada, and recognized as American Association of Anatomy Mentor- the goal of the Anatomy Scholars Program (ASP) is to support and increase retention of Underrepresented Minorities (URM) in the STEM academe. He was responsible for mentoring and supervising over 28 Ph.D. students. and Master's graduate students, 27 undergraduate students, and junior faculty. He produced 59 peer-reviewed manuscripts, with students almost always being the first authors.
On his first day visiting UMMC, he met faculty and students from the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education (DABE), visited the 3D Virtual Laboratory and Virtual Reality Laboratory, and hosted a publishing workshop titled ‘Dr. Wilson's PopCorn Research Workshop’ at the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education. More than 20 students and faculty members from the School of Medicine and School of Nursing attended the workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to assist our students and faculty in quickly translating their research ideas into digestible pieces for an audience they wish to reach. In this one-and-a-half-hour workshop, he has worked with participants step by step, from introducing each other to sharing research ideas and deciding which journal to submit their educational research/scholarly work to.
On the second day of May 6, 2025, he met the Vice Dean for Medical Education, School of Medicine, Dr. Loretta Jackson-Williams, Chair of DABE, Dr. Norma Ojeda, Chair of Faculty Development Committee, Dr. Lecretia Buckley, DABE and IMPACT the RACE faculty and staff, and faculty and staff at the Simulation center. He also visited the School of Medicine, Rowland Medical Library, UMMC Medical History Museum, and Simulation and Clinical Training Center. At noon, he delivered an outstanding IMPACT the Race Seminar on Educational Research and Writing Process/Submitting Publications at School of Medicine SM-124. His talk is titled 'A Peek Behind the Curtain: Publishing Your Educational Scholarship Research Findings.' The Office of Medical Education and the Faculty Development Committee of the Department of Advanced Biomedical Education co-hosted this seminar. There were more than 35 Students, staff and faculty attended the seminar.
